Armenia is in a vast area of intense young volcanism that had strongest manifestation in the Quaternary. Holocene and historical age activity has been established for some of the volcanoes. This allows suggesting availability of a considerable resource of underground heat in Armenia.

In 2005 the development of geothermal power is declared high priority by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Armenia as it is the only local renewable power resource, which could contribute to covering the base load.
